Setting Up a Free Genealogy Tool Box, Step Four & Five STEP FOUR - Accessing All Your Genealogy Documents, Spreadsheets and Presentations from Your Genealogy Tool Box Friday, April 25, 2008 12:02 PM 1. If you will look in the top left hand corner of your Genealogy Tool Box you will find "Web - Images, Maps, News, Shopping, Gmail, more and an arrow". 2. Click on "More". 3. Scroll down to "Documents" and click on it. 4. If you’re not already signed in to Google Docs, go ahead and do that now using the same email address and password for your Gmail account. 5. Click on "Upload" to upload files from your computer or 6. You can use the supplied email address on this page to email them to your Google Docs. I find this way the simplest and fastest way. You will receive an email in your Gmail account that you uploaded files or 7. You can make your own documents, spreadsheets and presentations here in Google Docs by clicking on "NEW" and then scrolling down to "Document", "Spreadsheet" or "Presentation" and then clicking on it. 8. You can read about what all you can do in Google Docs by clicking here or by clicking on the "help" button in the top right hand corner. 9. This will be your Genealogy database of documents to refer to while at home or on your research journey. 10. If you have a certain project that you are going to work on at a research library then you can upload those documents to your Genealogy Tool Box in the Google docs section so you will have access to them when you get there. 11. Go ahead and upload some things or make some of your own reference materials that you might need while away from home in your Genealogy Tool Box. Examples: Soundex codes and other names for your Surnames, early medical terms (if you don't have a list of these you can get them from here and then copy and paste them to a New Google Document), charts that you refer to, blank forms and charts, etc. 12. To add your Google Docs, Spreadsheets and Presentations to your Genealogy Tool Box homepage go to your Genealogy Tool Box and click on "Add Stuff" in the top right hand corner. 13. On the left hand side of the page, type in "Google Docs" in the "Search for Gadgets" search box. 14. Click on "Add It Now" 15. Click on "Back to iGoogle Home" in the left hand corner of page. NOTE: You can also access your Google Docs and any other program you have with Google by clicking on the "My Account" button in the top right hand corner. This will give you a list of the accounts you already have under "My Products" and give you options of getting more products that you need for your Genealogy Tool Box. NOTE: You can move all your boxes in your Genealogy Tool Box where you want them by Clicking on your left mouse button and dragging them where you want them. STEP FIVE: Accessing Bookmarks [Favorites] in Your Genealogy Tool Box Wednesday, April 23, 2008 2:15 PM Getting the Google Toolbar to access your Bookmarks 1. If you will look in the top left hand corner of your Genealogy Tool Box you will find "Web - Images, Maps, News, Shopping, Gmail, more and an arrow". 2. Click on the arrow. Scroll down and click on "Even More" 3. Look down the left hand column and find "Toolbar". 4. Click on "Toolbar". Click on "Try Google Toolbar 5 (BETA)" and follow the online directions. 5. You will need the new Toolbar features in this Google Toolbar for your Genealogy Tool Box. 6. If you have the Google Toolbar installed now you will see "Bookmark" in the toolbar. 7. If you don't see you’re new Google Toolbar pull up a new web page [not a new tab] and check to see if you see it now. 8. You can access help and knowledge for your Google Toolbar by clicking here. Be sure to read the help page and the feature section to get full knowledge of everything you can do with your Goggle Toolbar. 9. Try your Bookmark tab by bookmarking the Google Toolbar help page. 10. You can manage your Bookmarks and your Web History from the "Bookmark" tab (OR), 11. When you are on a webpage that you want to go to later for further reference click on "Bookmark" to bookmark the page to your Genealogy Toolbox. 12. You can get instructions for importing your "Favorites" to your "Bookmarks" by clicking here. 13. Click on "Settings" on the right hand side of the Google Toolbar and make sure you set the settings for each item on the Toolbar to your specifications. Accessing your Bookmarks in your Genealogy Tool Box 14. To access and organize your "Bookmarks" from your Genealogy Tool Box click on the "Bookmarks" tab and then click on "Manage Bookmarks". 15. Click on "Get Your Bookmarks on IGoogle" at the top middle of the page. 16. Click on "Add to Google". 17. Go ahead and some Bookmarks for your favorite Genealogy research websites. Accessing your Toolbar from any Computer 18. To learn about Accessing your Toolbar from any Computer and disabling your toolbar click here. Another Way to Access Your Bookmarks on Your Genealogy Toolbox 19. To access your Bookmarks from your Genealogy Toolbox you can also download FavTool from PC World. 20. Download and Run FavTool and save favorites to your desktop. 21. Upload file of Favorites to your Google Docs using the upload feature or by emailing them with your Google Doc email address located on the upload page. An Update to What We Have Done So Far 1. We have created a Genealogy Tool Box. 2. We have made access to our personalized Genealogy email account in our Tool Box. 3. We can see the weather forecast if we want to go to a graveyard, archives, etc. 4. We can see what time it is and what the date is. 5. We can access our favorite Genealogy research websites from within our Tool Box. 6. We can access important Genealogy documents, spreadsheets and presentations that we need for our Genealogy research in our Tool Box. 7. Go to your Genealogy Tool Box and click on "My Account" at the top right hand corner to see the products you have added so far with your Tool Box. To add some more to your Genealogy Tool Box go to Step Six. NOTE: You can also access your Google Docs and any other program you have with Google by clicking on the "My Account" button in the top right hand corner. This will give you a list of the accounts you already have under "My Products" and give you options of getting more products that you need for your Genealogy Tool Box. NOTE: You can move all your boxes in your Genealogy Tool Box where you want them by Clicking with your left mouse button and dragging them where you want them.
